I am a British nursing student who applied for military service but failed on health grounds. However, over here right now, one subject dominates the news and that is the "suicide" of four military officers all beneath the age of twenty-two at Deepcut Barracks in Surrey, England. One such officer who was reported as a suicide case had been shot five times in the torso with a high-velocity weapon. I would love to know how anyone could recover from a single high-velocity shot to fire AT THEMSELVES four more times. It's issues and incidences such as this that make the military look like a prehistoric, barbaric instituation, even though, for the most part, the military comprises of people who wish to serve their country and defend what they stand for. This said, however, I would like it to be made clear that many Brits - and many people that I have spoken to, utterly oppose the proposed action on Iraq. As Grethe said, haven't we learned anything from VN? I, for one, won't be voting labour in the next election! Katy.
