Serving in Silence is both a book and a movie if that is the question. The book is coauthored with Chris Fisher. The movie script was written by Allison Cross and Glenn Close played Colonel Cammermeyer with Judy Davis playing Diane Divelbess. Regarding other movies deplicting gays in the military, I am not aware of any. There have been a number of one person plays done around the country which depict the plight of gays in the military which have been wonderful, truthful and tragic.

If you are looking just for books that are dealing in the subject of homosexuality and people living the story there are a few. "Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence" is described pretty well in the title alone. It is one book with a compilation of true stories about present and ex-nuns expressing their view and personal experiences as a lesbian within the convent walls. The book, however, is out of print. There are copies available if you can find them online. There is also the book "Brokeback Mountain"... which was made popular by the movie that came out a few years back. The work is fiction but gives insight into male sexuality on a very cowboy level. :o) Also, "She's Not There" is a true story of a transgendered male-to-female individual named Jenny Boylan. The store is enlightening, tear-jerking and hilarious. I definitely recommend it. And... one more before I go... there is a book about a woman who decided to infiltrate the man's world by living as her male alter ego for an entire year. The book is her real life account of her experiences during that year. It is called "Self-Made Man". There are others I could name... these were just the few I thought I could point you towards. I wasn't entirely sure what you were looking for. I guess I just assumed you were looking for things about sexuality/gender identity/autobiographical works. If you would like I can most certainly provide you with my email address and I can send you my extended list of reading materials. - Jessica

Silly me... I responded to Bill with all book titles. Well, if you are looking strictly for military... I also am not aware of any. However, if you're looking into true accounts of homosexuality on screen or stage there are one of each I can think of right off the top of my head. There is a movie coming out about Harvey Milk. There is also the play about Matthew Shepard - The Laramie Project. Hope that was helpful. - Jessica

I was wondering any other bio-movies about famous people coming out. Seeing "Serving in Silence" was the first show I saw.

It is curious that there are not more stories of our lives. The Times of Harvey Milk and Milk tell his story as an out city commissioner in San Francisco who was assassinated. Looking on the web was no real help, hopefully others may come up with other titles. There are of course books and autobiographies including those of transgender people.

As far as famous people... I think you might be out of luck with that one. There are a few "fictional" movies about people coming our or growing into themselves. There are true stories of people coming out but they are hardly famous. Milk is coming out in theaters... That is the only other one I can think of.

Thank you Bart, that is a very smart idea. And thank you for the years of support you have given me through my years fighting the military for justice.

While not specifically a movie about gays, "The Story of Christine Jorgensen" can be found on Netflix (if it's permissable to reveal this). I would recommend it as educational, for although it's rather a B-type movie which deals with transexualism, it's done with dignity and heart.
